Assignment: Alyssum

One of my weekend projects involves this precious little flower.
Check back Monday to see the finished results!

Bradford Pear Watch - Day 12

These beauties are just about to peak! I was one day behind on posting photos, thus the two consecutive posts.  This morning they should be absolutely gorgeous.  I just wish my pictures did them justice. Click on the photos for a close-up look at the precious blossoms!

You Know It's Spring When.....

The Mobile Botanical Gardens has its semi-annual plant sale.  I've attended these for several years, although I rarely purchase anything. They do specialize in native plants, which is good. I just like to go and look around and get ideas.

This year's sale will be held March 26-28.  I've attached some photos that I took at the sale last October.

Admission to the gardens is free and tours are self-guided, which makes it nice if you are in the mood to explore.

My daughter snapped the shots of this beautiful butterfly. I probably followed him around for ten minutes waiting for him to hold still.

The herb garden.

I plan to go back again this year when the azaleas will be in bloom (hopefully) and get some pictures along some of the lovely winding paths.

Helen Keller - The Turning Point

If you have ever seen the movie or the stage play The Miracle Worker, you are familiar with the scene of Anne Sullivan holding Helen's hand under the water pump, and spelling out the word 'w-a-t-e-r' as it flowed over her hands.  Until this point Helen had learned to spell  'd-o-l-l'  but it had no literal meaning for her in her own mind.

On this day "Teacher," as Helen called her, drew water from the pump and put Helen's hand under the spout. At the same time, she spelled into Helen's other hand the word "w-a-t-e-r" repeatedly. The realization came to Helen that the word being spelled was the cool liquid she felt in her hand. At that point Helen touched the ground, wanting to spell its name. By the end of the day  Helen had learned thirty words.
